CURRENT ISSUE: Jedi are to Remain Neutral in Galactic Politics The jedi Question

FACE: Grand Master Veshraan
ASPECT: Ambassadors of Peace?

SWFotJFAE_Portraits_GrandMasterVeshran.png A Jedi was a member of the Jedi Order, who studied, served and used the mystical energies of the Force; usually, the light side of the Force. The weapon of the Jedi was the lightsaber, a weapon with a blade made of pure energy. The Jedi fought for peace and justice in the Galactic Republic, usually against their mortal enemies, the Sith and Dark Jedi, who studied the dark side of the Force.

Through intricate planning and dazzling adaptability, one Sith Master (Senator Palpatine of Naboo) rose to the office of Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, engineered the Clone Wars, and undermined the Jedi until he could, in one swift, masterful stroke, destroy the Jedi Order and enslave the galaxy beneath his banner as Emperor of the new Galactic Empire. Yet, even this catastrophe failed to eradicate the Jedi completely, and, within a generation, they had returned to once again protect and nurture the galaxy with their wisdom and guidance.

After the death of the Emperor, Luke Skywalker concluded that he must train a New Jedi Order if the galaxy was ever to be free from the tyranny of Palpatine’s Empire. But he couldn’t do it alone. And more importantly he needed training facilities. Once the project was sanctioned by Chief of State Mon Mothma, Luke Skywalker asked Leia Organa Solo to come up with a location to set up the academy. Mon Mothma suggested Yavin 4 to Leia who in turn recommended it to Luke. Luke agreed that Yavin 4 was the perfect location. He decided to set it up in the Great Temple that housed the earlier Alliance base from whence he had destroyed the first Death Star.

For decades he trained new generations of Jedi as the Grandmaster of the New Order. However, their numbers were few. Force users were rare to begin with and finding them among the teaming trillions of the galaxy proved a daunting task. To aid in the search for new Jedi and to prevent all of the Jedi from being located in a single place Skywalker began establishing academies on other planets throughout the galaxy. Most notably on Coruscant, Dantooine and Ossus.

The Jedi formed a Council as a governing body made up of a dozen of the most respected Jedi Masters who in turn elected a Grandmaster to speak for them all. Luke Skywalker eventually passed away after serving as the Grandmaster for over 50 years.

After the war with the Empire ended The Jedi worked to remain neutral politically and saw merit in offering their services as diplomatic envoys. In time all the powers in the galaxy came to recognize this and accepted them as impartial arbitrators. Even the Hutts and the overly bureaucratic Corporate Sector Authority has relied on Jedi wisdom to negotiate treaties from time to time or to hunt down a dangerous criminal. However, The Empire is unlikely to rely on Jedi in any capacity. Imperial policies are firmly against the use of the Force and they do not often allow Jedi to cross their borders. When they were allowed to act in Imperial space Jedi were heavily monitored by the Imperial Security Bureau. The Chiss Ascendancy is even more reluctant and does not allow Jedi to enter their space at all. The New Republic is the most cooperative and Jedi are largely free to act within its regions.

Recent events involving several well-known Jedi Knights including the rediscovery of the Jedi Homeworld of Tython have brought the Jedi Order and its role in the Republic into the limelight. The question of what their role in society should be sits on a knife’s edge…

IMPENDING ISSUE: The Isolationists versus the Seekers The Four Factions

ASPECT: A House Divided

Since Grand Master Skywalker’s death, the Jedi Order has found itself divided, with its members having very different ideas about what the Jedi Order should be. With the rediscovery of Tython, the Order has only split further in different directions. Each faction is composed of Jedi Knights, each Jedi following the ways of the Force and their involvement with the Republic Government in a different way.

Currently there are four main factions of the Jedi Order, each with its own common Face:

ISOLATIONISTS

FACE: Master Ashlan Kataar

MAIN TEMPLE: CORUSCANT

The Jedi had nearly been destroyed because they had involved themselves in galactic politics and embroiled themselves in the Clone Wars. The newly appointed Grand Master Veshraan came to believe that the best way to ensure the survival of the Jedi Order was to withdraw from the galactic stage and not get involved in politics.

This Isolationist position is favored by the Jedi High Council itself. The Isolationists tend to include mostly academics and mystics of the Order, favoring intensive study of the Force to fighting. Ironically, the Isolationists are the ones who are most involved with the Galactic Senate and the Sub-Committee for Jedi Affairs at the moment.

With its rediscovery, a growing contingent of Isolationists favor moving the Order to Tython to reconnect to the Order’s roots and further study its 25,000 years of history.

RECONSTRUCTIONISTS

MAIN TEMPLE: TYTHON

When Tython was rediscovered, a contingent of the Jedi Order arose who wished for a simple compromise for the competing visions of the Jedi Order: To return the Order to how it was before the Clone Wars, during the height of the Old Republic.

Their Leader, Master Arsuf has managed to give the idea traction and gain a number of supporters. Unlike most of her Tythoni Jedi brethren, Master Arsuf has proved a fast learner to Galactic Politics.

SEEKERS

FACE: Master Tosh Diath

MAIN TEMPLE: YAVIN IV

Many Jedi in the Mid and Outer Rims feel that they must rely on the Living Force and act when faced with tyranny of any kind. To them the highest calling of a Jedi is to seek Justice and protect the weak from the excesses of the strong. They soon became known as “Seekers”. The Jedi Council, whose seat of power is now located on Coruscant, continues to try to reign in the actions of the Jedi Seekers and the debate rages on within the ranks of the Jedi Order. Jedi Master Tosh Diath is the highest ranking Jedi Seeker and is an outspoken member of the Jedi Council.

LEGION OF LIGHT

FACE: General Jeris Balian

MAIN TEMPLE: THE ALLUSIS

Modeled after a legendary time in Jedi history, the Legion of Light emerged from the Jedi who fought the Imperial Occupation on Tython. Led by the ambitious General Jeris Balian, the Legion strives to earn the most amount of political power for the Jedi Order. The Legion and its emphasis on militarism simultaneously embodies the Jedi Order at its most powerful and its most vulnerability to the dark side of the Force.

The Legion’s strength lies its extensive military training along with its Guardian Fleet, a captured force of Separatist Battle Droids and Imperial ships reprogrammed to serve the Legion.

General Balian commands the Legion of LIght and their Guardian Fleet from the Starship Allusis, formerly the Imperial Super Star Destroyer Merciless, much to the anxiety of the Republic.
