RISE OF AN EMPIRE
The Galactic Empire, also known as the New Order, the Old Empire, the First Galactic Empire, Palpatine’s New Order, the Imperium or simply the Empire, was the galactic government established by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine to replace the Galactic Republic in 19 BBY and bring Sith rule to the galaxy.
The Republic, which had lasted for at least 25,034 years, ended following a period of intense political turmoil and the subsequent devastation of the Clone Wars. After the death of Count Dooku above Coruscant, the death of General Grievous on Utapau and finally the massacre of the leaders of the Confederacy of Independent Systems on Mustafar, Chancellor Palpatine (by then ruling with near-absolute power), began a purge of the Jedi Order, and then proclaimed himself Emperor of the galaxy and reorganized the Galactic Republic into “the first Galactic Empire” on the galactic capital.
Many people under the new Empire enthusiastically supported the vision outlined in the Declaration of a New Order, largely due to the violence that had plagued the galaxy for so long. Many Senators wholeheartedly supported the new government while a number of more cautious senators chose to watch and wait to see how the new government would handle the affairs of state. It promised to trade frailty for strength, chaos for order, and uncertainty for decisiveness. In retrospect, the foundation of the Empire had already been set down during Palpatine’s chancellorship and all potential threats eliminated; therefore, the transition from Republic to Empire was relatively smooth.
During the first few years of the Empire, the galaxy saw the single largest military buildup in history. A permanent class of Moffs and regional governors was established to more efficiently govern individual sectors and regions of the Empire. Popular support for the policies of Palpatine’s administration was high. In addition, the Empire also pursued a reconquest of the Middle and Outer Rims of the Galaxy, which included getting rid of any and all remaining Separatist influence.
DEATH AND REBIRTH OF AN EMPIRE
Following the death of Palpatine during the Battle of Endor, the Galactic Empire had slowly begun to dissolve, as numerous leaders worked to secure their own power, resulting in the creation of numerous fiefdoms. Most warlords had established themselves before Sate Pestage had been forced from the Imperial throne. His replacement, the Ruling Council held power for only a short period of time before the Director of Imperial Intelligence Ysanne Isard claimed the throne. Isard mostly managed to hold the rest of the Empire together for nearly two years before the New Republic made it a priority to capture Coruscant. With the loss of the capital world the Empire splintered heavily, with established warlords picking up the pieces that Isard left behind.
After decades of strife and infighting between various warlords and their fortress worlds Admiral Daala and Admiral Palaeon finally gained full control of the Imperial Remnant and unified it. In addition to military and political consolidation, Daala removed many of the restrictions on women and aliens that had run rampant. For the first time, women and nonhumans made up a large part of the Imperial war machine. This boosted morale and earned Daala the respect and loyalty of many Imperials.
THE IMPERIAL REMNANT
The Imperial Remnant was an Empire formed from the unified holdings of various Imperial Warlords who had ruled their own territories following the final collapse of the Galactic Empire in 11 ABY. As the galaxy’s largest Imperial power, the Remnant adhered to the tenets of the former Galactic Emperor Palpatine’s New Order; although slavery and anti-alien sentiment were abolished, the Remnant maintained a strong military and limited public expression. The military was composed of the Imperial Navy, Imperial Army, and Stormtrooper Corps; making up the Remnant’s war machine were traditional Imperial vehicles such as Star Destroyers, TIE series starfighters, and Imperial walkers. Led by a Council of Moffs and the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet from its inception, the Remnant was later ruled by a Head of State, which eventually became a democratically electable position in a wave of sweeping reforms. The citizens of the Remnant remained under its rule by their own choice, preferring the order and efficiency of New Order policy.
An election was held in 44 ABY that saw Admiral Vitor Reige become the Remnant’s Head of State. Jagged Fel eventually resumed leadership of the Remnant, and his “Victory Without War” program spread Imperial influence while aiding poverty-stricken worlds across the galaxy. The Remnant reclaimed considerable territory from the Galactic Alliance, and Fel’s rule eventually morphed into an Emperor-ship. The Remnant was reorganized into a dynastic monarchy known as the Fel Empire.
THE FEL EMPIRE
The Fel dynasty is the current ruling family of the Fel Empire. Before the ascension of Jagged Fel, the first of the Fel Emperors, his family—or at least, his parents—were media stars of the first Galactic Empire and later associated with the Empire of the Hand and the Chiss Ascendancy. At least three members were dedicated soldiers and Soontir Fel was one of the Empire’s most decorated pilots and his son Jagged flew with distinction during the Galactic Civil War. The family was also linked to one of the most famous Rebellion and later on New Republic families, the Antilles family of Corellia, by marriage through Syal Antilles Fel, though due to their different positions in the political fabric of the galaxy, they had little contact for much of the War.
An uneasy peace now stands between the Fel Empire and the New Republic. The Corporate Sector is nominally an ally of the Empire although many see the CSA’s treaty with the New Republic as a betrayal and relations between the two powers can be very cool.
THEME: THE SHADOW OF PALPATINE
Publicly, Palpatine is a topic of the highest taboo. Within the New Empire there are no statues of him and Imperial Ambassadors try their best to avoid Palpatine as a talking point but the Republic will never forget what Palpatine did. Most of Palpatine’s original supporters have either been ousted from power or have openly denounced him in hopes of preventing more rebellions within the Empires borders. Use of The Force within Imperial has even been banned to all but those most loyal to the current Emperor.
Behind closed doors Palpatine is still a symbol of victory to aspire to. Imperial Intelligence has ensured that all of the Histories disseminated throughout the Empire to its citizens depict Palpatine as a tyrant who began as a success story. The lone Senator from a small insignificant planet who became a democratically-elected Supreme Chancellor. The books don’t mention his political manipulations, his starting of the Clone Wars, his corruption of Anakin Skywalker or Count Dooku or his identity as a Sith Lord.
However, the war machine that is the Imperial Military and the ruthlessly pragmatic traditions that Palpatine built are what has kept Empire alive this long. Even the Moffs that follow Emperer Fel’s “Victory Without War” plans follow Palpatine’s examples if only as a warning.
IMPENDING ISSUE: “THE DEATH STAR WAS JUST THE BEGINNING…”
Not just superweapons capable of destroying planets, many Moffs build their might. Stormtroopers are still being trained and deployed on the streets. AT Walkers and Tie Fighters roll off the assembly lines. New War Droids are experimented within the secretive Maw Cluster…
Among the ongoing projects is the widespread adoption and development of Genetic Engineering and Cloning technologies among the general public. Citizens of the Empire have begun to contribute their DNA to a common bank and alter themselves to root out impurities and improve their well-being through gene splicing.
Contributing to the Empire’s growth is the Imperial Labor Forces, an army of Cloned Workers grown like the Clone Army before it to be obedient, efficient and to love the Empire more than Life itself. The ILF has allowed the Empire to rebuild their holdings and colonize new worlds faster than any before it.
THE CURRENT STATE OF THE EMPIRE
The Galactic Empire ruled the Galaxy for a generation. At the end of the Galactic Civil War, the Republic called for its end once and for all. The Imperial Remnant successfully stationed itself on the planet Bastion in the Outer Rim to escape the Republic Forces.
The Fel Dynasty that followed reestablished The Galactic Empire into a major political power through its bold new leadership exemplified in its “Victory Without War” campaign.
But, despite the progressive reforms by the new Emperor Fel, the New Galactic Empire is not a Democracy or a Republic. It is still an empire ruled by the few and powerful, through cunning, ambition and ruthlessness.
